The Beginning
As a beautician, Yuko Yamashita had met many women who were unhappy with their hair. Following her fated encounter with Phiten, a premier company of health and beauty products, she established YUKO to answer the concerns of these women. Since then, YUKO has developed many innovative haircare formulas and technologies. This section introduces the mission and technologies of YUKO and its plan for the future.

You've had a long career as a beautician.
What prompted you to establish YUKO?

Yuko --- Many women today have some kind of problem with their hair. As a beautician I have worked on many different hair types and learned that there are significant numbers of women who have lost confidence because of their frizzled hair. Tools and technologies to effectively repair frizzled hair were not available, and many beauticians didn't want to handle frizzled hair. I always attach importance to honest, personal communication with my customers, so it was very hard for me to watch them feel unhappy with their hair.

Knowing the problems many women had, what did you think you should do?

Yuko --- We're living in a society where women are expected to be independent and take control of their own lives. I wanted to give beautiful, healthy hair to women of the world so that they could go about their daily lives with poise, because hair is an important element that fosters self-confidence in women. I found my mission in helping women achieve healthier hair and minds by introducing techniques and products that do not burden the hair. It was my belief that healthy hair should come from within rather than being simply on the surface.

I was always aware of the importance of creating and maintaining healthy hair. The motto I raised was "to create healthy hair the customer can care for herself." My aspiration was embodied when I was introduced to Phiten, which helped me establish YUKO.

What is the Phiten technology that helped embody your aspiration to create healthy hair the customer can care for herself?

Yuko --- The product that impressed me most was the "water" Phiten had developed based on its original technology. Around 70 to 80 percent of hair-styling chemicals are water. If the water medium is not "good," other ingredients will not work effectively and we can't achieve beautiful, healthy hair. A "good" house can't be built without "good" carpenters, even if excellent tools and great technologies are available. "Good water" in hair-styling chemicals is like a "good carpenter" in building a house.

I found Phiten's Phild-processed water to be an essential ingredient in producing "good" effects on the hair and body and maximizing benefits with minimum damage. The Phild technology is the underlying technology of YUKO products.

Your hair-styling chemicals produced with Phiten water will make the hair and body healthier

YUKO --- Yes. We are approaching a time where people change the color of their hair just like changing their clothes. However, commercial coloring chemicals are limiting our freedom of expression, because nobody wants to damage his or her hair just to have a fashionable style.

Do you know that common coloring products contain many alkaline components that damage the hair? Compare the shine and feel of your hair colored with YUKO's product with the shine and feel of your former hair. I'm sure you'll see a big difference. YUKO's "Top-on-Do" coloring agent allows you to explore colors by minimizing hair damage. Freedom of expression should result in a freer, more fulfilled mind.

Among the various beauty-related formulas and technologies available around the world, YUKO REPAIR was granted U.S. and Japanese patents. Why did you decide to patent the technology?

Yuko --- It was because we wanted our "idea" involved in the repair of hair to be recognized. Just as people have recipes for cooking delicious omelets, we had a recipe for repairing hair. It was truly a pioneering and revolutionary event for us to receive a patent for our idea. We filed a patent application because our customers were so happy. Now that our idea is publicly recognized, we can teach the REPAIR process to beauticians around the world and allow far greater numbers of people to enjoy the amazing benefits of the process.

YUKO's technologies will be practiced by trained beauticians. What do you look for in a "beautician"?

Yuko --- Beauticians must be "beauty advisors." It isn't enough just to have excellent cutting and coloring skills and the ability to create a beautiful hairstyle in the salon. A beautician must be able to create "healthy hair" that the customer can easily care for at home. To do so, he or she must be able to advise on haircare products and the correct way to care for hair.

So that we can better communicate the benefits of our products and technologies to our customers, YUKO has introduced the "Hair Sommelier" system. Just as a sommelier selects the best wine for each customer, a hair sommelier prepares the coloring or hair-styling chemicals that best suit each customer, describes the hair treatment that's achieved using these chemicals, and gives advice on how to care for the hair at home.

There are still many women around the world who are unhappy with their hair. YUKO will spread its wings throughout the world to help more women regain their self-confidence.
